Lori Smith
Born near Gallup, New Mexico in 1980, Lori Smith has been developing her art since 1993 at age 13. Learned by watching rather than being directly taught, she would then go away and practice in secret. As she gained confidence, Lori came to believe that the art of incising pottery could be taken to another level. To create these fine pieces, Lori begins with an unfired pot, which becomes the canvas for her designs. After drying for a day, the red clay is then sanded, painted, under glazed, etched, and finally, fired. Recognizing in the careful juxtaposition of traditional symbols and colors, an opportunity to create something that embodies the very texture of Navajo philosophy. Lori challenges herself to create finer and finer art.
