Caring for Native American Jewelry

Maintaining the high quality of your Native American Jewelry is important. If you want your Native American made jewelry to last then follow these simple care tips.

Caring for Gemstones:

  • Never use toothpaste, bleach, or other harmful chemicals to clean your jewelry. This is can be damaging for both metal and gemstones, causing deterioration, discoloring of stone and scratches.
  • Same goes for swimming in Chlorine water. So remove any jewelry before swimming in a pool, and thoroughly wash off any sunscreen or leftover pool water before putting jewelry back on.
  • If you wear cosmetics, perfumes, or spray-style hair care, do not apply these while wearing your jewelry. Wait until the cosmetic has settled, and then put on your jewelry. Avoid having your gemstones touch foundation, spray tans, sunscreen or oils.
  • Cleaning Your Gemstone – After each wear, gently use a polishing cloth to wipe clean your gemstone. This will get rid of any body oils on the jewelry. Do not wet the cloth or scrub with it, a simple soft cleaning will do. The ultra soft polishing cloths can be found on amazon and convenient stores. (We recommend the Connoisseurs brand)

Caring for Metals:

  • To keep the metal shinny and clean we use the Connoisseurs polishing wipes. Each wipe is chemically treated with micro-fine, non-abrasive polishers. The Wipes are perfect for cleaning gold, copper and silver jewelry. The wipe will also apply an anti-tarnish barrier. (Do not wipe stone)
  • Oxidized Jewelry that is suppose to look antique, avoid a hard polish. The connoisseur wipes can be used every once in a while to give it a fresh look. (Don’t polish in circler motions.)
  • Do not bend or widen bracelets, necklaces, or other jewelry that is made of metal by yourself. The metal can get distorted along with any imagery within it most cases causing the gemstones to become loosened and even fall out. If a stiff piece does not fit correctly, please contact us for options in adjustment.
  •  Money clips are one of the few metal items that can be slightly bent, due to their purpose. They are constructed to be slightly tightened or loosened to accommodate your needs. But keep in mind the more you flex the metal, the weaker it gets.

Durability:

  • Please avoid allowing any of the jewelry to come in moving contact with a hard surface (such as dropping it onto a nightstand). This can cause the gems to crack, break, or fall out.
  • Avoid wearing inlay jewelry such as rings when working with your hands in instances where the gems could come in contact with hard surfaces or damaging substances. Gardening, pet cleaning, and house cleaning can cause inlay jewelry to collect the substances and damage the gem.

Caring for Sterling Silver Jewelry

  • Store your jewelry in a plastic bag that is placed in a cool, dry place. This will prevent discoloration and tarnishing.
  • Regularly examine the prongs for any looseness or damage. If you notice anything, contact a professional jeweler to avoid losing the gem.
  • Sterling silver taking on a yellow, black, or darker color, is becoming tarnished, this happens when it is exposed to humidity, acids, and other elements. Use anti-tarnish wipes as mentioned before for the best defense and can be used to wrap individual silver pieces or placed in the plastic bag.
